A Twice a Year Affair

Switching the season's clothes, that is!

Since tomorrow is the first day of Spring, I decided to get rid of all those dark, heavy clothes and switch out to sandals and lighter weight clothes.

The above photo was the beginning of the process.  It was an ugly scene with clothes EVERY WHERE before I was done.  Oh, and this took four hours.........

Through it all, Velcro never moved from "her" spot on the end of the bed.  Even when I was dropping large plastic bins from the cabinet above the closet.  She's still there!

A woman with one closet is a frustrated woman.  I've been relatively clever by having my bed higher then usual so I can store those lower bins under the bed.  Taller ones are in the cabinet above the ONE closet.  Hence the need to switch out clothes twice a year.

I didn't know twelve years ago when I downsized from well over 2000 sq. ft. to 1000 sq. ft and ONE closet that I was at the beginning of a trend - simplifying and downsizing.  It does require ingenuity, I promise.

It also keeps me from acquiring a lot.  Now, others would disagree with that statement, but, I do get rid of things semi-annually.  If I didn't wear something in the previous season or its totally worn out after many, many years of wear, it goes.  I have a huge pile on the stairwell to haul up to put in a bag and
give  to Josefina, the maid tomorrow.

I'm NOW truly ready for Spring!  I can feel all the men out there reading this just shaking their heads.
Lucky you!

Well, darn. With that title, I was expecting something a little more stimulating. :)

This is one area where I enjoy being a guy. I can live out of one suitcase all year. And do. Kinda.

Rick, I'm well aware how lucky I am - it was 81 this afternoon. Woo hoo, sandal time!

Kay - I WISH! ha........

Steve - YOU are lucky to be a guy. For January and February I too lived out of one suitcase. I was sick of the clothes by the time I got home....of course January was beach clothes and February was cold weather clothes so it wasn't too bad......

Tossing out clothing that's worn out or hasn't been worn for a year? Heresy! Why, just this morning, I put on a t-shirt that hadn't left the closet since 2005, and I felt rather good about it. I archive clothing, and nothing feels better than pulling out something, remembering when and where I wore it (or wondering "What was I thinking?"), maybe wearing it, maybe shelving it away for another turn at the future. Just last month, I came across a jacket to a suit my mother had made when she lived in Turkey in the early 50s, and it delighted me to call up my sister and ask her if she'd like to have it. My grandfather's tuxedo is in the closet, and there are even buttons to a Civil War uniform (CSA, of course). Some people collect art, and some of us collect clothing. I'm afraid if I ever moved, I'd need an extra bedroom or two just for the clothing!

Sure, a goodly share walks out the door as tote, and the truly worn out items are cut up into rags.

But meanwhile, I still worry that I'll have to cut up curtains to make myself something to wear when times get tougher. But I'll worry about that tomorrow.

I must confess that I have some t-shirts from the 80's that I wear when I'm sure no one, not one human, will see me along with some flowery pants that are so hideous, but so comfortable to work in the garden in.....I did have second thoughts about giving up some of those clothes as I could cut them up now that I'm going to be quilting....
darn you Jennifer, I might have to rethink the whole darn thing!

I guess I don't have all that many clothes because all I have to do is change the shoes on my shoe rack. It is quite small and in Spring and Summer I usually only wear sandals.

That's what going to the Tuesday mkt. does to you!
It sure was good to spend time with you, Todd and Lynn last evening!
You're looking great.......

Thanks Barbara, we really enjoyed it too! Maybe I should stay away from Tuesday Market.
