Little Things Mean a Lot

Little things that at one point in my life would not have been particularly acknowledged by me, are now savored and enjoyed with great gratitude.

For all the years I've been in Mexico, a large area rug has been on my list of things that I wanted in the living room.  Voila!  One has now been purchased for a minimal price and each time I look at it or walk on it, I'm thrilled all over again.  No, it's not particularly little but it was little in price.

Then while in Texas, with the Houston List of things to purchase in hand, I purchased at Tuesday Morning a set of king size sheets for me and queen size sheets for the guest house.  They were on special for $24.99!
Half the price of sheets that I priced at Costco in Celaya.

Last night, after Josefina had made my bed earlier in the day with the new sheets, I luxuriated in the silky texture and feel of the sheets.  Absolutely lovely and soft to the skin.  Sleep last night was extra pleasurable.  They are now my most favorite sheets.  All the others I have are flannel.  With the down filled comforter on  last night, I was perfectly comfortable sleeping on non-flannel sheets for the first time in a long time.

Then on that Houston List was a squishy hose.  You know, those new type of hoses that fit in a little bitty space but expand when water flows through them.  My big hose is so darn heavy because the yard is so big that lugging that thing around is no fun.  Enter the squishy hose with a new nozzle.  Woo hoo, what fun.  I
can hardly wait for Sebastian and Matilda to come over.  They will enjoy playing with it while watering the plants...........and themselves, of course.  In the meantime, I can go all over the yard now with minimal struggle.

There were several other things on the Houston List.  One new set of luxury towels and new washcloths which I found on sale for nearly nothing.  One-fifth as expensive as the ones at Costco in Mexico!  Surprise.

To round out the list, I purchased a new pair of Merrell sandals for myself.  They were pricey, but when I put them on my feet I sighed at how comfortable and well fitting they fit my feet.  Add to that that they are blue and a light turquoise, my two favorite colors.  I'll be wearing them for years.

I'm feeling like the Queen of the Hill these days with all these things that I returned home with to add to my life.

All little things, but, they sure mean a lot!

I think it's so important to treat ourselves from time to time to things such as this. The difference they make in how we feel is important as well. As I've gotten older what I consider a luxury has changed so much. Now, as you say, it's more often than not the "little" things. Yet the feeling they impart is big! So I look for (hopefully on sale) luxuries and when I find them I, too, get them. You bet. Could be something like your long-awaited rug, could be a lovely cheese, a nice bottle of wine, splurging on a magazine I don't normally buy, a trip, shoes, a book I don't need but covet, or a special evening out. It's life lived on our own grand scale. The good life indeed!

Hey, I know just how you feel... all the little conveniences we lug home after a trip "up north" are so appreciated. Maybe we are all the more grateful because we think before we buy? When I am shopping, I always ask myself: Now how on God's green earth will I get that home?

On my most recent trip, I did not pack home a little thing. I actually brought back my dollhouse. However, my husband and I will spend happy hours this summer... painting it, sewing new curtains and so on. The doll house was made by my grandfather and given to me on my first Christmas, and 62 Christmases later, we will give it to our granddaughter

It is always fun to shop north of the border, since the same items here in Costco are so pricey. I know I always appreciate an item more if it is a bargain. The carpet looks lovely in your living room!

Oh, my Writing from Merida, what a wonderful thing you did! I had a dollhouse that was made by my grandfather and electrified and everything. When I left to go to college, my dad gave it to the Salvation Army. I've never gotten over it!

What fun you will have refurbishing it for your granddaughter. I'd love to see a before and after photo!

Thanks for sharing..........

Thanks Shannon. Yes, it could be that I bought the things up north, but I think also I've become more conscious of what life is about. I'm glad you like the new carpet.
I have a recently purchased one in the bedroom as well. Just haven't photographed it yet! Will soon.

I wanted to bring back a collapsible hose on my last trip north, but I had no space for anything more. Maybe next time. I need to drive to Bend to retrieve a few boxes from my mother's house.

I'd never heard of a "squishy" hose. Do they come in the same sizes as normal hoses? I'll have to check it out. I too hate lugging the hose out to the back flower beds.

Babs, I have been subscribing to your blog for some time now and love every one I read. I live in San Miguel, but friends from Texas turned me on to your blog. I didn't realize that I could comment, but now I know how, so watch out! You sound like your philosophy of life parallels my own. You are always so positive and appreciative of life, it always makes your blog posts so very uplifting. I want to thank you for that. Actually my friends from Texas are visiting me right now and will be here until the 17th. We would all love to meet you, as we already feel like we know you from reading your blog. It may be presumptuous to ask, but we are Texans after all. We would love to take you to lunch or breakfast, if you can work it into you obviously busy schedule. Of course, I'd be thrilled to meet you, even if it is after the 17th.

Steve, why don't you have them shipped UPS to Barra. It sure would be a lot less expensive. UPS now is set up very well to ship in and out of Mexico........and it's not that expensive. Not like it used to be........

Bill, The house is called a "pocket" hose and this one extends 50 ft. I saw them at Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, but bought mine at Target as there it was $10 less then Home Depot!

Initially when they first came out with these hoses in a marigold color, there were problems with them disintegrating and breaking. My first one did, but, at the time I didn't know that was a common problem.

Now they are a dark green color and are new and improved. Lowe's does NOT carry them as they said they were too much trouble initially..........

Will email you with a photo of what the box looks like later.

Hi Nikki! What a wonderful way to start my day with the kind message from you! I'm so happy you and your friends enjoy the blog. And, I'm also glad that you have figured out how to post a comment. I wish more would do so.

It would be great fun to meet you and your friends, lunch would be preferable. After all the years of having to be up and dressed early in my working years, I try not to do that any more! Another of those little things that mean a lot. So, my email address is babsofsanmiguel@yahoo.com and I look forward to hearing from you.

I'm available on Thursday, the 11th, if that works for all of you.......
