From an ugly little cactus that is growing on the rooftop terrace in an ignored coffee can, comes beauty. The delicacy of the coloring and shape of this huge bloom, to me, is lovely. Hopefully you will agree and enjoy this simple gift to you from me.

Lovely; but how does it smell?
There is a bloom that looks somewhat like that the smells very, very bad which attracts some type of insect to it which in turn fertilizes it. Is this bloom the same kind do you know?
Hi Brenda - This didn't have any smell at all. I know what you're talking about, but I can't remember the name.
I do have night blooming cereus that are so fragrant that you can smell them 20 ft away! But, its a lemony smell.......
I like it much better than the previous pic of your TV! Hope all is well with you...still looking forward to retirement SOB next June....
Charles, just a year! Where will you be moving from? And, do you know where you'll be moving to? How exciting.........All is well with me.
What a lovely surprise - an unusual bloom!
I have one of those...doesn't smell too great and while beautiful, is sticky and attracts insects...at least in my part of the woods.
American Mommy - I'm confused. I thought you and your family had gone back to the USA but when I popped over to your blog, there were photos of the kids playing on the patio......
I so enjoy your writing and I'm so encouraged by parents now who have the courage to expose their kids to different cultures. BRAVO
That is a Carrion Plant, Stapelia gigantea, and I too love the blooms. I had several when we were up in the desert, they don't like to be wet too much. It is probably a good idea not to plant it very close to where you sit often or a door as they do smell like dead meat when they are ready to be pollinated and they attract a lot of flies. Wonderful look though, a really alien bloom.
Yuk Jonna - First bats and now a "carrion" plant. I have never detected an odor from it but the blooms only last a day - have never seen flies near or on it, but its pretty windy on the roof so maybe that's why. Yes, I agree that they are very alien looking and so delicate.......
I know :( I almost didn't post what it was because I didn't want it to be a downer. It's a beautiful plant, it will grow new plants easily from cuttings, just stick them in well draining sand or dirt. It should do really well up there in the dry air of SMA. I got mine from a friend who had it in a hanging basket and it was gorgeous draping over the basket and covered in blooms. She did move it away from the patio door though, she put it where she could see it easily but not smell it.
