A Heartwarming Sight

As I walked into centro today to have lunch with an old friend, this is the sight I saw. All the traffic was backed up for a block and stopped still. The police officer was escorting this elderly man across the street very, very slowly. It was heartwarming to see everyone being patient as this man traversed busy San Francisco Street right by the jardin. This is not unusual to see in San Miguel.
I joined my friend of almost 25 years from the Clear Lake area for lunch. If you click on the bottom photo that black eye is now only yellow and purple. It certainly isn't swollen shut anymore. The bangs hide the bump on the forehead that is still there. After 3 weeks!
So, for those who wanted to see the "evil eye", there it is.............almost well. All in good time.

Where were you having lunch?

You're looking fierce, even wounded.

Babs a pretty girl is like a melody - even if the melody is the theme to Rocky!

Felipe, I love having you to edit my blogs and my life!
Dana, Lunch @ Harry's in the front room. Well, I guess I'm glad I'm looking "fierce".......
Calypso, you are SO clever. I have felt like Rocky - especially three weeks ago. So many people have asked what happened and I wish I could have had a good story other then I got "dizzy". I DID think of a few retorts, but didnt have the guts to say them.

I've seen the same thing in Mazatlan. Four lanes stopped and passerbys helping somebody across Ejercito Mexicano. This is a super busy street down the spine of the town and not a horn to be heard. Sorta makes you feel good about people. And it wasn't a transito, just ordinary folks.

My husband navigates San Miguel with his yellow lab guide dog (Ron is legally blind). We have had several times where we fight back tears, over the kindness of strangers who silently take it upon themselves to make sure Ron and Rusty are protected from traffic.

Once we were coming back from San Juan de Dios market on the right side of the hill leading up to Canal, which is a busy intersection. Rusty walks on Ron's left, so he was close to the cars.

A young father in a cowboy hat, carrying a child of only about 18-months or so, strode up to Rusty's "outside edge" and silently accompanied them to the safety of the sidewalk on Canal. He never said a word, just kept pace with Ron and Rusty.

Another time the taxis wouldn't stop for the two of them (some don't want to take the large dog in their taxi) until TWO policemen finally waved
down an empty taxi, and literally ORDERED the driver to take them to their destination!

Yes, there is softer, kinder side of Mexico often missed in the wake of other more sensational news.

At the heart of nearly every human lies the potential for tenderness toward our fellow man. Nothing moves me more than to see it play out in every day life.

Thanks for sharing Babs and Tina!

Tina, thank you for sharing those stories. It touched my heart as I'm sure it did all who read your ocmment.
I'm continuously reminded of the kindness of strangers - even just the taxis stopping to let pedestrians cross the street. It's so civilized - sad that we are so surprised!

Morn'n Miss Babs, what, no wearing of the "GAUSEY"? But your looking good, you need a cigarette holder, more movie starish.Felipe's right, bracelet's upside down, but your right side up, so it all works.

Dang, Ruco, I was hoping you would not explain the bracelet dilemma to her. I wanted to keep her puzzled.

Ruco said...

Sorry Felipe, could have said her right side was down, but then, she'd want to know about the left side, and wheather it was up or down, poor woman would have been totally confused. and she's from Texas, Texas people own guns, never mess with a woman who owns a gun. Don't know much, but, I know that much.

Babs said...

Well RUCO, one cannot wear gauzy after Labor Day - its just like white shoes, doncha know?
And, I'm glad I WAS right side up. I can't understand your last blog about my right side and left - I think they are the same.....and as for the gun, that is so funny that you mention that. Here's the story - I was in NYC once and this taxi driver noticed I had a Texas pin on and he said, "Oh Lady, I know not to mess with you". Strange comment from a taxi driver I thought. And I said, "Why". And he said, "Cause we all know that women from Tx carry guns in their purses". I didn't correct him. I've never shot a gun in my life - there were times when the thought crossed my mind......
So, no gauzey, bracelet flipped the other way and no guns.....sorta boring isn't it? Where is the fun in my life?

Well, Jeez, how am I supposed to know about that stuff, as for white shoes, never owned a pair in my life. Had some covered in snow a few times, they were whitish, didn't last long though.

Everythings good in the world Felipe, she's still puzzled.
