While walking into town yesterday, I passed, as always, three churches BUT this time something was different, very, very different! In the past, the doors were always open and the everyday person could slip in to sit, to pray or to just marvel at the beauty. There are twenty two churches in San Miguel - as far as I can tell, without driving by every one of them - the doors are closed!
Back on May 28th, Deb of www.zocalodemexicanfolkart.blogspot.com wrote about the theft of art from Iglesias Santa Ana. They slit the art out of the frames and escaped. That is the reason for the closed doors.
How sad!

It is sad. Churches should always be welcoming places. Instead, crime breeds suspicion. Very sad.
Babs, it is very sad indeed. One of the things in Mexico that I always marveled at was you could walk into any church any time during the day. Not that way now.
Hope God has a special punishment for those who steal from the church!
Every time I approach a church and find the doors locked, my heart falls, though I completely understand why this is.
Are the doors locked now or just closed? Sad either way.
I have to agree with everyone else that it is a sad statement that the churches have to lock their doors. How low is that to steal art from a church?
Interestingly, lasat week when I was over in Guanajuato none of their church doors were closed. I walked into the church in Valenciana where the paintings are three stories high and the altar pieces are covered in gold....no one but a little girl collecting donations. Of course it would take a Mac truck to get the stuff out of there!
