Having had surgery on Monday, I laid low and took care of doing EXACTLY what the Doc's written instructions said to do. I even stayed in my jammies yesterday and rested..........just so I could drive about ten minutes away to hear Milton Hopkins with a dear friend.
It's amazing that one can be prone on the bed, thinking that you can't get to the elevator and down to the door, but the music was pulling me. BLUES MUSIC!
What a fabulous two hours of music it turned out to be. Milton Hopkins is in his mid 70's and played with the ease of one who has played for at least fifty years. You could tell that he was often off on a music trip of his own as he played. I truly felt I was in the presence of greatness.
He was playing with Texas Johnny Boy last night who I had never heard of before. He played another instrument that I love - the harmonica. I felt that Jimmy Reed had been reincarnated. The two together with a drummer and bass player were exceptionally good. I actually went up to the stage afterwards to ask TJB if he was from South Louisiana. No, he grew up in West Texas!
Milton's career began lo those many years ago when his cousin, Lightnin' Hopkins was playing in Houston. Then in the early 70's, he toured for eight years with BB King, some with Little Richard and also Marvin Gaye! Just to name a few.
I felt like I had been transported back to my teenage years listening to blues at the Bantam Club on Airline Hwy on the outskirts of Baton Rouge. It was just so sweet! I hated when it was over.
Live music is such a joy! Joe Ely is at the Mucky Duck on Friday but both shows are already sold out and are SRO. Darn... Guess that will be my one foray to hear music this trip.
Sure wish we had more of that kind of music in San Miguel......
Another great music memory to add to the last year of memorable concerts I've been able to attend in small and intimate venues. Just the way I like it!

I'm glad you're back to living your fabulous life. I'm a couple of days behind you, but maybe Friday I can go out and do something fun.

Kim, how are you feeling? I think I overdid it just going out for 2 hours last night......take it easy, if advice from me has any validity!
I now realize I really did have something done on Monday....as well as you did.
Hopefully you have someone there to take care of you.
Thinking of you!
Does Mr Hopkins like pina coladas and walks on the beach?
Hello Barbara, congratulations on a successful surgery. I remember the excrutiating pain that was associated with my gallbladder just before I had to have surgery. NOT FUN! :-) Glad to hear that you are on the upswing.
I've been following your blog for a couple of days now, and am hopeful that you can help my.
My mother and father lived in SMA for about 24 years, my father (David Beekman) passed away several years ago and my mother (Kay Beekman) passed away last summer. Since that time, I have been trying to figure out who I can trust to help with an estate sale of all of their furnishings as well as a good realtor and trusted attorney. My last attempt at this was horrible and I haven't been able to get very far since then due to my own health issues. I am coming back in early March and would really like to have some connections set up so that my time in SMA would be successful.
I don't know who else to turn too for some advice and/or contacts.
ANY help you can provide would be WONDERFUL.
Best regards,
Maggie Beekman
Hope you heal well and soon Babs. The blues is my favotite music too, used to go out on the town here in Vancouver and take in the blues bars, thosebwere the days...
Well Dana J - I have no idea...but he sure can play that guitar!
Magsbe - if you will write to me at my email address, babsofsanmiguel@yahoo.com I will give you names of two good individuals to help you with the estate sale and possibly other information. I knew your mother, I believe and I'm so sorry for your loss. It is difficult to handle those things from a distance and I'll be more then happy to try to help.
Peter - Indeed, THOSE were the days. Interestingly, even then, I think I knew I was lucky to have those experiences.......
Wow Barbara, you are certainly resilient! Surgery and clubbing all in the same week. I'm so glad you are feeling well enough to do it, it sounds like a really great evening.
Well Shannon, I basically went from the car at the front door of the club, to a chair, to the car and home to bed. But sitting there listening to good music was a real treat.
Music is such a great healer!
