IT Happened Again Yesterday

I was having lunch with a friend yesterday at Via Organica, here in San Miguel, when  an attractive woman approached our table.  She introduced herself and said that she reads the blog and has read it for quite a while.  It seems she just wanted me to know how much she has enjoyed it for all this time.

Touched by her comment, I asked her name and we chatted for a few minutes.  It's so lovely when someone takes the time to approach  to tell me something like that.  It happens often.  I continue to be amazed that people recognize me.  I, in my mind, have decided that I don't look anything like the blog photo so I should be incognito.  Obviously I'm wrong.

The first time someone approached me in public, almost thirty years ago, I was astounded.  A young woman walked up to me in the Galleria in Houston and spoke my name.  I assumed, incorrectly, that she was a former Girl Scout from one of my old troops.  You see, I was a Girl Scout leader for seven years.  Often a young woman would approach me and tell me who she was.  Of course, since most of those girls had been in the fourth grade when I knew them and now they were in their mid 20's, they looked nothing like they had as a child.  I, somehow, to them, still looked the same.

But, back to the incident with the young woman in the Galleria..  She approached me because she had been in a class that I had conducted as a guest lecture on restaurant and hotel design.  A student at the University of Houston Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, in fact, she had heard me speak more then once on various subjects.  She was effusive and complementary.  I was tongue tied and humbled by her gushing.  I couldn't even tell you what I said, other then to thank her very much for talking with me.

Since that day and after the many meetings with readers of the blog, I hope that I'm not still tongue tied and silly in my comments.  Believe me, I'm honored each and every time I'm approached.  Along with being astounded.

As I have said repeatedly in the past, "The blog has enriched my life in ways that I could not have possibly imagined." If it brings information or solace or happiness to a reader, that is just icing on the cake.

I have that happen when I'm on Isla and it always confuses me at first. They recognize me because I'm with Craig! His photos are much more accurate. I'm thinking I'd recognize you! I hope I get the opportunity some day!

Beck, I so hope so as well. Maybe I'll have to meet you on Isla!

Funny how that happens, especially when you least expect it. I was in Tahiti 30+ years ago and someone who was staying at the same resort we were at, approached me and introduced himself, happened to be someone that heard me speak at a convention years before.
Small world.
I was surprised that anyone could remember something so inconsequential.

Tancho, obviously, you touched a nerve or said something memorable that that person remembered. I guess we never know if we DO make a difference!

Well, I plan to seek you out if you are in town late February. It is as if you are a character in a book that you are writing yourself. And it's a book that I enjoy reading a little of every morning.

Wow, Christine, I never thought of it from your perspective.
I look forward greatly to meeting you.

I'd rather read "you" than the newspaper, plus you've inspired me to "clean out the closets."

Oh my, Sharon. THAT is a far reaching effect! ha......

The other side of that coin: I gave a review of a restaurant on my Blog - mildly critical of a close by dog scratching its fleas while we were dining - this warranted threatening my life - hmm.

I'm so sorry to hear that - I never thought about the fact that unsavory people might read the blog - my experiences have always been positive.
Stay safe.......

I poke my nose into politics and social issues a bit and always expect to suffer for that. So far it has not happened, no matter what people think of me, they are polite.

Babs said...

Croft, I don't do that often, but, when I do, I hold my breath......

I certainly respect Bloggers who mind their "P"s and "R"s but sometimes I just feel I must let my voice be heard. However, I do try to pick my fights. ;)

Well Barbara, you're a Stah! (Something my old secretary, a Charlestown girl to the core, used to say often with her thick Charlestown accent.)

I'm glad we met you! I hope to do so again in the future.

And @Christine - Great comment! I love that idea!

Where we debate putting a photo of ourself on our blog. So far, still hiding behind the web browser.

Croft, there ARE times when I want to really let loose and then calm down and rethink. Once when I was attacked repeatedly by a fellow blogger, I wrote a private email and used a swear word. He has forever banned me from commenting on the blog. I learned a lesson from that.
It takes a LOT for me to loose it!

Kim, Igualmente. Watch for comments from Sharon from Boston. She's a teacher and is coming down here this Spring. Since you've been to Mexico and she is coming down, maybe ya'll could meet for coffee?
Go for it, when you're ready and post a photo........Most of your readers won't be your neighbors, I don't think. I'm so glad you're writing frequently.

Hi Barbara,

Yes, I've noted that there's a "Sharon from Boston" out there, I need to check out her blog.

I go back and forth on posting a picture on my blog. Once it's out, of course, I lose my anonymity forever. On the other hand, it's not like I'm publishing a blog full of embarrassing stuff either. We'll see.

I started posting with a photo NEVER imagining that anyone would recognize me that I didn't already know......you see how smart I am, Kim? ha......
