Music In ALL Kinds of Venues

The Houston music scene is alive and well.  I enjoyed it in all the different
places that were available in my short eight days in Houston!

The first was Tom Russell at Dosey Doe in Conroe.

I arrived in Houston at 1PM on Thursday and from 2PM on Thursday until Sunday, it was frog-stranglin' rain as can only happen in Houston.  Friday night was no exception.

The concert in Conroe was an hour north of the city.  It started at 7:30, if I remember correctly, so needless to say not only were we driving in a deluge, but also in the Friday night commuter traffic.
Oy vey.
The only salvation for me was, (a) I wasn't driving and, (b) I was in the backseat of a Cadillac and couldn't see anything but a tiny bit out of my window.  Hence, I did not STRESS.

It was worth it.  Tom Russell played a great show and had all kinds of audience participation. The people I was with know Tom, so it made it even more fun.

One can even just go to a record store, like Cactus Records, and hear good
music.  Max Gomez was playing that night at the Mucky Duck and stopped by
the record store to entertain for a bit.  While listening, I perused there cd's and
picked up Muddy Waters, Diana Krall, Merle Haggard and Leon Redbone.

Quite a mix but allllllllll are good except the Muddy Waters which was more interviews then music.

A few nights later we went down to Discovery Green with blankets in hand, to listen to
Ray Wiley Hubbard. It is right downtown.  One of my favorite places to hear music for a couple of hours - FREE.
It is relatively cool in the evenings.  This night had a breeze along with dragonflies that kept circling our blanket.  Weird.

One of the foot stompin' favorites of the crowd (and me) was "Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother".  It, of course, became a singalong.  Such fun.

Last, but not least, was a Home Party in Pasadena to hear Jeanie Burns And Andrew Hardin.
Oh my, great guitar playing and singing.  Again a couple of hours of all kinds of music.

Hardin and Burns have a new cd out called "Lounge".  I had a copy to sing with on the road heading home to my heart's content.

Each time I meet these singers, I ask if they ever come to San Miguel and the answer is always "No, but I'd love to".  So I give them my card and say,"If you can come, I'll find a place for you to sing."

We sooooooooooo need this kind of music in San Miguel.  Really!

I'm a performer in Austin who currently does acoustic shows around town, and I'll be moving permanently to San Miguel after I retire from the State around Xmas of next year. I'm hoping there's some venues around SMA where that kind of music can be played. Fingers crossed!

Also, I've been enjoying reading your blog for the last year as part of my on-going research to get ready for the Big Move.

Walter, come on down! There is very little of our kind of music and a pent up demand for it! Restaurants like to have music, there are other venues. Willie & Lobo come into town and play at Mama Mia's. A new place VC & Friends has a stage and that is where Doc Severinsen and friends have been playing. You won't get rich, but you'll find many fellow musicians.......Maria Muldaur has played here for special events as well.
Glad you enjoy and read the blog!
