Easter Season Begins Today in San Miguel de Allende

With the procession from Atotonilco church, a UNESCO World Heritage site eight miles from San Miguel, to San Miguel de Allende last night, the Easter Season has begun!  The church bells and, of course, the fireworks at 6AM signaled the arrival of Our Lord of the Column, a statue which is the first to arrive each year.

The fireworks last for about an hour.  Long enough for one to lay on one's pillow and contemplate the next few weeks of morning early wake-ups.  I jest.

If you would like to know how Easter is celebrated in my part of the world, go to the website,
www.experience-san-miguel-de-allende.com/events-of-holy-week-1.html

It is very comprehensive and helps those that are new here to understand the symbolism and significance of all the traditions.  I must say though, reading about it is nothing like being here.

Walking the streets during Holy Week to the fragrance of chamomile and other flowers and spices, is truly heavenly.  To see altars created  in the ancient niches in the sides of buildings is heartwarming.

Seeing  the angelitos (little angels) all dressed in white with gold wings in processions is mesmerizing.

I promise you, one cannot find a single Easter Basket or chocolate egg, no matter how hard you try.
Which I have done.  It is all about the death and resurrection of Jesus.

A tradition here that is over 300 years old.  I feel honored to witness it each year.

The photograph at the top is one of the many altars set up all over the town each year by individuals and colonia groups.

Enjoy reading about it, if you wish.

It really is a magic time of year here. I don't mind being woken early as the rest of the day is likely to be so pleasant.

So true - so true. Just a while ago as I was laying on the chaise, I realized that it was absolutely quiet - not a sound! Lovely......
