The Great Chaise Race

Typially when I go to the beach, I rent a private house and am secluded on a mostly unoccupied beach. Not this year. I'm surrounded by the geriatric set from Canada.

It is a "trip" watching all the socializing that goes on. As each couple arrives, there are hugs and kisses and catching up on what has happened in the last year. It goes on over and over. Anyone who says that Canadians are not social has not been to Bungalows Mayorca. They are out on the lawn from dawn to dusk and even after that. Little groups here and there. Some are on their laptops from dawn to dusk too. That blows my mind. Why even bother to come to the beach?

But anyway, it is an interesting sight to observe. The funniest of the phenomena is the "great chaise race". It starts at sunup. I've only seen it once........people surreptiously go out with beach towels in hand and start offloading one chaise after another to position just exactly where they and their partner want to spend the day. You see, there are more people then chaises. Hence the need to "get out there early" as someone told me.

Is this what I have to look forward to when I'm part of the "geriatric" set? DON'T tell me I'm part of "that" set.........(My friend Ron (of Ron and Fred fame) just said I AM) Oy vey.

The chaise thing drives me crazy. I usually stay in rental homes and apartments where it's not an issue, but I was at a small hotel with limited loungers in November. The loungers sat unoccupied most of the day with towels draped over them. Finally the hotel staff started removing the guest's towels from the unoccupied loungers so the rest of us could use them! I bet it's the same people who stand up and block the gate a half hour before their row is called! : )

Same thing happens on cruise ships. Being one to believe all the scary skin cancer hipe, I don't participate and am still drying up like a prune. I'm not old but my skin is. Maybe I should try tanning.

Hey, don't knock us non-tanning folk. We, too, enjoy being by the ocean watching waves, blue water and sunshine...just from under cover and if friends, join us in the shade all the better.
