Moving on

When I come to Texas I stay with different friends and family. I've learned a week is max because no matter how hard one tries to be inconspicuous, another person impacts another person's space. So, I'll be moving to my fourth place.

Hence I'm moving on to be near downtown Houston manana en la manana. I'll be "inside the loop" as Houstonians like to describe it. The place I stay is magnificent with views from the 19th floor of downtown, Memorial Park and Buffalo Bayou. No, no buffaloes ever roamed there that I'm aware of.

I'm always awed by how treed Houston is and by the amount of wildlife that inhabits the bayou. It's only a 10 minute drive to downtown but it feels like you're in the country IF you don't look at the traffic on Memorial Drive.

Since my friend is part of the culinary world, as I once was, we have much in common along with many friends in common. So, until I leave for Denver next week, I'll be up in my aerie peering down at wildlife............and humanity and dining at some of my favorite restaurants, I'm sure.

Babs,
The name comes from the Buffalo Fish, Ictiobus cyprinellus. At one time the bayou was supposedly full of them. They look something like a carp and grow to be very big...about fifty pounds.

Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen...I could picture you sitting at the bar with cool drink and a slice of banana key lime pie.

Bob, you are just a fount of knowledge! You never cease to amaze me. Is that where Buffalo Speedway got its name too?

And Dana, do I know you? I've been at that bar before.....having the cool drink...no pie though.

Babs, we've never met. I just
started reading your blog this year. But I've read the archives, so I'm trying to keep up!

I mentioned Tony Mandola's 'cuz you
you're going restaurant hopping, and you're from Louisiana, and I don't know if Racehorse Haynes eats there, but Jim Jamail used to... so I thought you might know that place.
Very Good Food. David Purdy is my
favorite waiter.
Just for blogging fun, I hope you
tell us where you dine out, on this trip to Houston.

I know it probably doesn't ever get mentioned in the culinary world but we love the 59 Diner on Shepherd and Greenbriar for home-style comfort food...great chicken and dumplings, meat loaf and terrific old fashioned shakes (I know...you and I don't indulge but Ken loves them).

I can't imagine a trip to Houston without going to Goode Company Seafood on Dinkins and Westpark just off Kirby. Seafood Compechana, seafood gumbo, oysters on the half-shell.
