Molly Ivins

She's gone - so sad.

Candelaria

Candelaria is coming and many people look forward to this event every year, me included. For the Mexicans it is a sacred time when they bless the seeds they are about to plant for the new crops. It is also the time when the nurseries (viveros in Spanish) come from all over Mexico with wonderful plants and pots (macetas) to buy. I LOVE walking the aisles and talking with the salespeople about their plants. I see things that I NEVER saw in the USA and it is fascinating. Everything is so inexpensive that my Pathfinder is always filled to overflowing with palms, bourganvilla, geraniums and whatever else I want to try.
Last year I decided to redo a large flower bed in homage to my daughter Jennifer and to plant white azaleas, butterfly lilies and white daisies. What a beautiful profusion of flowers I have enjoyed ALL year...........well, that is the butterfly lillies. They have not stopped blooming since I planted them What a delightful surprise.
If you saw my roof terrace you would say I couldn't possibly buy one more plant and I have every intention of going this year with no thought of buying..........but maybe one or two things?
Maybe.............

Molly Ivins

Molly Ivins has been a columnist for many newspapers and an author for as long as I can remember. A Texas gal, she has been a voice of humor and reason on the political scene that I have loved to read. Fat Cats have always been aware of her razor-sharp wit. She often referred to GWB as "shrub".......... She has always called it like she saw it and has lived to tell about it.

Molly is sick, really sick with that stuff called c-----. Darn it, we can't lose another sassy, witty Texas Girl!

Hang in there Molly!

Snow birds and Sweat birds

Yup, the snowbirds are here! You can spot 'em in the jardine in their short sleeves and/or bermuda shorts while the rest of us are in four layers of clothes. It is so funny to walk up to someone in bermuda shorts and say, "So where are you from in Canada?" and they surprisedly say, "How did you know?" DUH.....we don't even have to watch the weather. We know when the weather is getting cold north of the Mason-Dixon Line 'cause the town fills up. So, they are here and will be here til the middle to end of March. Then it is blessedly quiet until the "sweat birds" arrive. That phrase unfortunately did not come from me, but my Mexican hairdresser. When he said it, I nearly fell out of the chair I thought it was so funny. Anyway, the "sweat birds" arrive mid-June til mid-August and these are the raucous birds 'cause most of them are from Texas and boy do Texans love life and like to party! It's a fun time! Only Mexicans like to party more then Texans so life is good.
So now you know, the snow birds and sweat birds flock in and out of San Miguel and life goes on. Ironically, San Miguel is not dependent on the international visitors - that is only 20% of their business. Eighty percent of the tourism in San Miguel is "domestic" or Mexican. Viva the middle class in Mexico!

to fill you in on thoughts and daily activities that I hope you will find interesting.
